I just got dvipdfm to work. All fonts are correct in the resulting PDF, and I'm lucky. For some reason, dvipdfm fails when I try to run it in my pmx-and-tex-notes-working-directory, complaining about "missing output filename". If I move the dvi files to another location, dvipdfm works without any problems. I don't know why yet, but the case is under investigation.
