Aha! It's in TeXLive *on Windows*; not surprisingly, it seems to have trouble with Postscript specials, even with ghostscript installed. Herman: Is there some reason why you prefer to work with dvi files rather than Postscript or PDF? dvi really isn't a good format if you're using Postscript slurs. BTW, the -s option to pmx2pdf will cause processing to "stop" at the dvi file. Do pmx2pdf -h to see all the options.
