Ancient history. The problem has long been corrected, from everything I
read. Show me a drive manufacturer that never made anything but perfect
drives... and I'll show you a purely theoretical drive manufacturer. ;-)

I have a couple of those, they are fast and quiet. Cheap too. What's not
to like? I have Hitachi drives in at least 3 of my ThinkPads, no
problems (yet). I like the 7200rpm single-platter ones. Very quiet and
fast, use little power.

AFAIK no one drive manufacturer has a lock on always making the most
dependable, best drives. To really assess reliability you'd need MANY
drives from each manufacturer, in a controlled experiment. Google has
done such a study and released some results, but did not reveal any
drive manufacturers. In the absence of such data, you pays your money,
you takes your choice. All hard drives fail, it's a just a question of
when. Make backups, etc... The fact that Lenovo uses Hitachis in new
ThinkPads should tell you something: if the failure rates were
astronomical, the warranty repair costs would be too, and they would
stop using them.

storagereview.com has performance data on many drives. The site proper
is fairly inactive now, but the forum still has lots of current info.

Good luck,
-Frank
