I still have a Multi-Tech 56k modem around somewhere.  It is (or was) a 
company that made very high quality equipment.  This router should be able 
to serve as an IPSec VPN server, but for details you'll need people familiar 
with the specific router.  Maybe Multi-Tech has an online forum?

Another alternative is to leave a machine on at home and run something like 
Hamachi.  (See

This is true, but that's mainly IPSec, and some VPNs will let you get around 
this.  BolehVPN, for example, has a "cloak" mode available (at a cost of 
speed).
