Another benefit for me is that if you leave your email on the server, the pop service  does not mark downloaded messages as read.  So when I log into MSN messenger (I actually use the aMSN linux program), it's constantly saying I have new mail, when I really don't.

The hotmail extension will mark the messages as being read.

For most Hotmail users the POP/SMTP service is fine. Remember, once
in a while, to go to the web interface to check for any mail that is
in your Junk folder.

The extension remains useful for those wanting to access the Junk and
custom folders as well as for those who are in an environment that
prevents them using the secure ports required to access the Hotmail
POP/SMTP service.

Yes.  That I am.  I have now uninstalled them.  I wasn't sure if I
could, but it does still work fine.  Are the custom folders the only
benefit to using the Hotmail Webmail addon?  What else am I missing
out on?  Thanks anyway for everyone's support.

So you are using the POP mail servers provided by Hotmail.  That means
you are not using these extensions at all and you may uninstall the
extensions.

You will be restricted to accessing only the Inbox from the Hotmail
service (no custom folders can be accessed by the Hotmail POP
service).  If that serves your needs then you are all set.

I seem to have solved the problem.  I am now downloading emails
successfully.  I changed the server name from local host to
pop3.live.com, and set the security to forced SSl.  For all of my
purposes, it seems to work fine.   Thanks anyway for your help and
support.
