Thanks Chris and Eugene. I set up the "spare" account again and left
the server as "Localhost". Sent messages seemed to go OK, but
attempting to receive resulted in the following:
"Sending of username did not succeed. Mail server localhost responded:
undefined is a unsupported domain".

I checked account Settings and found the User name was not the full
email address, so I edited that and tried to receive from my account
in hotmail but got
"The RETR command did not succeed. Error retrieving a message. Mail
server localhost responded: negative vibes from
[email protected]".

nb there is a page when you enter Account settings asking for account
settings that is mostly blank for my spare account. I have left it
that way

Actually, Chris, I was doing what you were doing and using the Hotmail
free POP service (although I didn't know that). I have dodged the
lack of access to Junk mail by making sure there is none classed as
such in Hotmail. I set up 5 filters, one for each vowel, so that a
message containing a vowel in the sender address was sent to Hotmail
Inbox. That meant everything gets through to Tbird inbox. I am using
the tbird adaptive junk filter to filter the proper junk. The problem
will arise if/when i go onto an external PC and want to access my
emails - Hotmail will be a mess so it would be nice to get the above
to work.
