I should have checked further, although the spare account seems to be sending OK it isn't receiving. Eugene kindly sent a simple text message12/13 Jan which I received on the spare account when accessed through hotmail in Firefox but neither it nor other test messages are arriving in the spare account when accessed in Tbird.
The RETR error message appears - though intermittently. Sandy
