hiddewie left a comment (osm2pgsql-dev/osm2pgsql#2482)
I stumbled upon this pull request, and would like to note that this
generalization strategy would conceptually solve a problem we have on the
OpenRailwayMap (https://github.com/hiddewie/OpenRailwayMap-vector) where low
zoom levels require rendering of many railway tracks which are extremely
fragmented. Linemerging them by grouping them on the relevant fields for
rendering them on low zooms (just a small few), exactly what this pull request
proposes, solves a data transfer issue in the amount of features. This
processing (grouping and merging) is now done manually inside the tile SQL
views, but it is rather inefficient. Having support of Osm2pgsql to generalize
during import / update would reduce both the SQL code, and improve performance.
Thanks to those working on implementation of this feature.
