The short answer is "It depends...": * on what you are reporting on... :) * how rich formatting you expect; * do you plan to repeort on great amount of data and reach them dynamically; * are you familiar with x-path and other XML languages; * are you familiar with JAVA, because in case of Jasper there is no Python anymore; .....
Crosstabs, let me guess... :) If you could do them with standard set of spreadsheet functions, then... I think that there could be wider set of Extra Functions, that solve standard statistical tasks. At the moment there are most basic ones, and even now need for writing of customized parser is reduced at least several times. And if we think of features, there are many features, that are simply not available with Jasper. The most viable for us, is lack of standard text formatting options in Jasper. There is no options of formatting long chunks of text, there is no standard tables, and many more features that you can achieve with OOo. I have spent several days at the end of last year, trying to find this feature with Jasper, and fond forum thread on Jasper, where one Jasper core team member tells, that it is not possible. Well I suppose that nobody will argue to the statement that OOo is way better at formating than iReport. It is just OOo's primary task. ;) That is why we joined Domsense, and created report_openoffice as it looks now. Speed, well this is where comparable tests should be done, but I am ok even if Genshi+Relatorio+OOo is slower than Jasper, as long as it is computer that spends it's time on processing, not me on formatting the template.
