Making tables in JR is quite easy IMO (using bands and field borders, and since 3.7 there is a new 'table' report element). What do you mean by "formatting long text"? (i guess i never encountered that problem before in the ERP reports i have to make) Also I like how you can divide complex reports in 'subreports' in JR, it makes the templates more easy to understand (not sure if this possible in report_openoffice). JR also supports features like barcodes/crosstabs/grouping/charts out of the box. (I imagine it's possible in OO but probably much more complicated).
