I too like many others have read this and stayed out until now. I am one of the ones who would NOT give the student a break. Yes, she has had a tough life filled with difficulties - so have probably a larger number of our students than we would suspect - physical, psychological, economical, emotional - you name it. If a student had earned a D, then, unfortunately, they earned it. I don't see myself as a gatekeeper - but I do see myself as making sure the person knows the information.
