My 2 cents is that since TIPs is essentially a public discussion forum,
there should be no restrictions on distributing the posts. If the group was
closed and our discussions reflected the limitations of the membership then
I would want approval to distribute my comments. But as we have seen from
the recent requests from students, anyone can join TIPS

Subject: Policy to forward TIPS posts?

At 12:29 AM 1/16/01 -0500, you wrote:

Tipsters, on occasion I forward TIPS posts to students or others who might
be
interested in the contents of the post. Typically, I ask the author of the
post for permission to forward the material. Lately, however, I was
thinking
of routinely forwarding relevant posts to my students as all of my classes
are
in an e-mail distribution list. For example, Stephen Black's latest post on
myelin would make for interesting supplementary reading material when this
topic is covered in class. Before forwarding, I would, of course, ask for
Stephen's permission. But, if I were to do this with many posts the process
of
seeking permission would be a nightmare. Then, I noticed the copyright
information (below) in David Wheeler's post and I began to wonder whether
this
is something that TIPS might want to adopt as an informal policy. There is
nothing in the TIPS guidelines concerning the forwarding of messages. So,
what do you all think? Bill Southerly, what do you think?
