One situation certainly does not "rationalize away" the other.  If we
knew *exactly
*what caused the difference in responses, we'd have a goldmine.  But as with
almost all behavior, it can get complicated.

Certainly we have some sound ideas that include the sometimes-obvious:  a
mentor, a caring relative, the age of the child at the abuse, the length of
the abuse, the severity of the abuse, patterns of addiction (in abuser and
abused) and now, of course, some exciting new research about genes that may
help make a person more resilient.
