Text Diff allows to select and copy text, so you can paste it into the commit message (I need this feature). This is not possible in the Hunk Selection, for technical reasons. Hunk Selection uses a TreeView, so the smallest unit of selection is a hunk. In TextDiff, it is a character. I don't think the new tabs harm anyone. However, it would be doable to add config options that would disable/enable the Text Diff and Preview tabs.
