mine also 'hung' showing 'scanning media for music files. please wait ...' but not progressing.
I eventually got it to scan through a combination of 'stop server', 'eject USB' and putting Touch into standby (I haven't used the factory reset). I powered it down overnight (eject USB first) ad today it recognises/remembers all teh files on the USB drive but setting/advanced/squeezebox_server still shows 'scanning media for music files. please wait...' setting/advanaced/squeezebox_information shows 'rescanning music library...' where it shows "Library Information" when done. Drilling in shows 'empty'.
