When I first received it, I could actually listen to any music on the
external USB drives without issues.
Then, over time, as the scan progressed, the capacity of the device was
drained.
Ultimately the scan aborted.
Now, I can't listen to any music any more as it starts playing, stops
after 5 seconds, needs 2 minutes to serve up the next 5 seconds worth
of music and so on ...
I am pretty sure that this is due to exhausting resources for the
stupid library that I don't even use (I am always navigating by folder
as I am too lazy to tag all of my music, I know there are tools but I
don't see the benefit ...).

To your theory: I did a factory defaults reset (multiple times,
actually) and last time "let it do its thing" for one week (!) after
turning it on (that's with a 2TB drive that has 1.5TB of FLAC files on
it).

So not letting it do its thing (when I first got it) and just start
using it before it commits suicide by allocating all of its resouces to
the library worked best for me (contrary to your hypothesis),
