There is a decrease in brightness about 15 seconds after you stop using the screen. Is this what you are refering to? This is supposed to increase the life of the screen backlight by not running it at full maximum all the time.
If you are seeing other random changes in brightness try running manual brightness and see if that fixes the problem.
