Just another data point to add to the mix. I've had luck using a WD 750GB 3.5" 7200RPM FAT32 SATA Drive mounted in a (powered) Thermaltake BlacX (docking station)
This was a test backup disk I had available and had a mixture of Flac, MP3 and video files (just because) searched for and identified some ~10K files Them scanned them in about 45 minutes, Then about 5 minutes for the art work.
