I too am interested in trying the USB out of the Squeezebox if possible - in order to get an asynchronous connection to the respective DAC.
The 'ticks' you mention are something common to USB.. I've picked out the below paragraph from this link: http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/empirical/offramp.html "The advantage of USB is that it is a dedicated connection that will always have the bandwidth required. The problem with ticks on the USB interfaces is more of a computer resource issue and the efficiency of the USB drivers.
