You don't say whether you are still using normalisation when you rip.

The basic idea is to rip your CDs in a way that gives you a bit perfect
copy on your hard drive. Using various settings such as normalisation,
etc, etc defeats the whole objective.

At the moment there are just too many variables to properly diagnose the
cause of your problem. By ripping straight to flac, bit for bit, that
would at least eliminate one factor.

Have you ripped the albums that are "unbelievably loud" just straight to
flac, no normalisation, no DSP, no effects, no replay gain flag, etc?

If you haven't done that I suggest that you do and see what the effect
is.
