Free versions are a difficult animal. As are refundable Apps. Android had this "extended trial" model in the beginning (you could return the App within 24h) and they had huge problems with people just downloading the Apps, copying them, getting a refund and then still using them. It was obviously pretty easy to break the copy protection (if there even is any, don't know). They then changed this to a 5min interval. While I don't know why this should help it looks like it did.
And having a "reduced functionality" version is hard. You need to have something that is useful in itself (or you get bad reviews if you even make it to the App Store) but especially in a small market like "Apps for the Squeezebox" you still need to make sure it's not so useful that people just stick to the free version. It's a catch-22: you want it to be good and to suck at the same time, which can't really work. I tried to get around that a bit with iPeng Party. It's free and it has it's own, dedicated use case for which it is fully functional in itself. I even sometimes use it on the iPad as an iPeng replacement when I'm building playlists because I like its look a bit better than the "normal" iPeng for iPad look and it's just so simple for just queuing up songs. But at the same time you can have a look at it to see how iPeng would perform and what you would get in iPeng, at least WRT browsing the library: the menus look similar and perform similar to the "full" iPeng (iPeng is a little bit ahead in the meantime in terms of scrolling performance and artwork rendering but iPeng Party is still close enough to give an idea). So if you are interested in what you get, especially performance wise and compared to the other Apps around, that's what you can use for free. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97366 _______________________________________________ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
