No private interpretation here, Kevin. This passage you quote does not say that God gave them the name Christian. I realize that the scholars debate this issue whether or not God gave them the name or whether it came some other way. It seems to me that the matter is clearly resolved simply by looking at the fruit. There are an estimated 85% of U.S. citizens who call themselves Christians. Surely 85% of our citizens do not have faith in Jesus Christ. The name is used for religious reasons of associating groups of people together which may or may not have anything at all to do with actual true faith in Jesus Christ. Take any church on the face of the earth who call themselves "Christian" and you will find some of those Christians in that group do not truly have faith in Christ. Look also at Paul's rebuke of the Corinthians for saying, "I am of Christ" which is what Christian means: For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? (1 Corinthians 1:11-13 KJV) Men often invent labels to stereotype people, such as Nazarene, Galilean, and Christian. Here with the Corinthians they were headed toward these same labels with perhaps names like Pauline, Apollosean, Christian, etc. In modern times, we just add more to the list, such as Baptist, Methodist, Wesleyan, Lutheran, and on and on. The problem with your assertion here Kevin is that the Mormons say that we should worship only the God that said this. Peace be with you.
