I am a bit surprised you had any expectation that any of those shows
would still be good; I am surprised you ever thought most of them were
any good. One Day At A Time probably was seen as a quality program in
its first couple of years, but my memory is that all the rest were
widely seen as schlock at the time. I think the interesting question
is, are there any shows on now that are widely seen as Quality TV that
will be ridiculed in the future? My bias is such that I already expect
people in 10 years to look at Survivor, American idol and The Bachelor
the way we think of "That's Incredible!" But it is also possible in 10
years people will say "Two and a Half Men? Really?".

I spent a lot of time around the set of Silver Spoons (my aunt was one
of those studio teachers for the kid actors), and the schlock-osity of
the show was obvious at every level of its production. Ricky was
actually always better than the material they gave him (which might be
one indicator of just how bad the material was) and I think wanted off
that show about the time he was old enough to know what girls were
for. I always thought he looked miserable on that set, not in the
sense of "I'm a kid and I want to be out flying a kite" but in the
sense of "I'm a kid actor and can you believe the shit lines they keep
giving me".

I am going to predict Barney Miller and Taxi will be in your next
column, and as dark horses, maybe Lou Grant and The White Shadow?
