This week’s episode featured a long interview with Johnny Gilbert. I wasn’t
engrossed by it but he did talk a lot about the game show business before
he started Jeopardy and there are people here who could be into that deep a
dive.

In the Q&A part, one person asked if Daily Double clues are specially
written or if they are regular clues. They are specially written to get a
contestant to think a little more deeply rather than a regular clue which
encourages a quick response.

Another question was about tiebreakers. The way they work is if the first
response is incorrect the second contestant can ring in. If they don’t or
they also get it wrong then there will be a second tiebreaker and they can
keep going until someone rings in with a correct response. It’s in the rule
book that the producers can edit out of the broadcast any rounds that don’t
produce a winner. So if a tiebreaker were to go several rounds the
producers wouldn’t have to find a way to compress the show elsewhere, they
can just show the deciding round.
