The numerical offsets are unambiguous and de-duplicated. These absolutely make the most sense so there's no squabbling over what to call it, when it's only a fixed offset that doesn't change. No guessing as to the actual difference between MST and PCT, or which one to choose. The abbreviations are still valuable for zones that follow DST rules. In addition to the current offset, the abbreviation encodes what rules to apply for time changes. A numeric offset implies that it's unchanging. -- Andrew Vit
