When people ask for a way to invoke PC applications from a browser based on interaction with an MV app, that's exactly how I do it. There can be an issue accessing clients outside of a LAN, so I either have a tray utility poll the server for things to do, or I use a push mechanism that doesn't require a direct socket from server to client.
