Sorry to disappoint you but I've been trough this type of gradients and it is very confusing to use. So I made use of compiz Trailfocus plugin. As for the line between toolbar and other content I tried that too and it just doesn't feels right without it. I think we will be able to implement better line (fading at its ends) when we start the work on the engine.
