Actually the paleness is lost when the present icon scales down to 24px... 
but i tried ur idea.
and i'v attached the screenshots of the icon in action on a 19px panel... oh 
and the panel is vertical on the right just to get u oriented.

i think that the presence of the gradients adds the minor feel of lighting, 
also if the colors get a bit more darker then the visibility of the icon in 
dark/transparent panels becomes tough. especially in the transparent panels , 
where the backgrounds vary .
