I would strongly suggest you SliceHost. WebFaction is good, but you get your
home directory to work with, and mostly CGI instance script for apache
process. Though you can host most of the things there, still you will feel
restrictions.

SliceHost gives you one slice of Linux(there is the choice of Linux, and
ubuntu is in the list), means whole linux VM on Zen for you to control, you
can start/restart server, install anything with ROOT permission.
