You might be surprised how much you can do with the command line only. You can play music and browse the web even using cli programs :-) If I had a machine that resource constrained, I would probably install ubuntu server on it and potentially X and a basic window manager (fluxbox perhaps) if I really felt the need. Most of the time, cli would be the best bet.

As far as being too old to boot from usb, if you wish you can use a cd to load the usb drive. A quick google showed me this page:

I can't speak to it, but I have done similar things in the past. The internet is your friend here. Nothing is impossible, but consider your time investment ;-)
