The Acer Aspire One, for example, uses a Fedora based distribution called Linpus Lite. If it has a 'helper' desktop, there are still ways of starting a Gnome desktop on it. For that matter you can install an up to date version of Ubuntu on it using a pen drive. I think we need more information though.
