@Keith: all you have to do is install the "nvidia-current-updates"
package, better if through Jockey (the restricted driver manager).

@pelm: I'm wondering if you're facing a different problem then
(especially since you mentioned that the driver was working for you). We
need more data. Please reproduce the problem (i.e. enter Unity and let
it freeze, then either get to the terminal or reboot), type "sudo
nvidia-bug-report.sh" and attach the nvidia-bug-report.log.gz file that
you should find in your home directory.
