I'm surprised that ubuntu developers have no Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge systems ?!? Perhaps no one uses Unity 3D... My Notebook with Sandy Bridge and my Desktop with Ivy Bridge freezes completely with linux 3.2. In my case, linux 3.3.6 or 3.4 solves the problem completely :-) But my AMD System with NVIDIA GeForce 8200 mGPU freezes like hell...
