This is good reasoning and for us information that was missing. Inkscape 
should probably have a bug report.

By "display" I am thinking you mean fonts that can not be used for 
printing or that look bad in printing. Is this correct?

I am not sure how to do this. Suggestions of a package that makes this 
easy and suitable settings would be great.

Bug description:
  A user reported this issue the Ubuntu Studio contact mail, and I found it was 
a fair point.
  We should minimize the fonts we distribute to an amount which is reasonable.
