Yyyeeeppp, that's *exactly* what the spec says. They even spell it out for you
- if you MUST use /usr/local, don't do it, but point it to /opt/local
instead. But like I wrote previously, if you do that, you will get busted by not
being able to use sparse zones, and that's a shame, because it's a waste of
disk space, especially since there is really no need for using /usr/local when
there is /opt.
And by the way, I'm really glad you actually listened and read the man page.

By the way, I read the man page for filesystem...
It is clearly NOT as violently disagreeing as you are with my use of
/usr/local ...
Let me quote this as a reminder for you and others :
" /usr/local
Not part of the SVR4-based Solaris distribution. The
/usr directory is exclusively for software bundled with
the Solaris operating system. If needed for storing
machine-local add-on software, create the directory
/opt/local and make /usr/local a symbolic link to
/opt/local. The /opt directory or filesystem is for
storing add-on software to the system."
And in particular "If needed for storing machine-local add-on
software, create the directory /opt/local and make /usr/local a
symbolic link to /opt/local."
So what I am doing (i.e. storing machine-local add-on software) is not
really a problem. The recommended method is to link /usr/local from
/opt/local ... but certainly NOT to avoid using /usr/local (like you
seem to imply).
Again... Just quoting the official document to which you refered as
well...
Gilles.

I put my files where I want.
That's your prerogative, I'd just like to ask you not toteach others to do so.
Others use /usr/local ... it won't change. Get over it.
Never. Not a chance. No way. Ever.Standards and specifications are there to
make thingsCONSISTENT and EASY, not to be ignored.
And by the way, if you use /usr/local, you will be unable touse sparse zones,
because they correctly mount /usr read-onlyfrom the global zone.
You can of course side-step that, but doing so is hacking thesystem, which
isn't even close to CMMI level 2 or above.
