Hey there! The best advice is engage someone with experience, or get some of your own.
If it's an environment that's been untouched for some time, messing with it and not already knowing most of what you should expect can lead to utter disaster. In answer to your questions: Are the issues related to firmware? Not sure. Depends on what the specific issues are. It also depends on what the software stack between the DTU and the actual client OS is. Firmware update is automatic, and it's controlled at the server. It's either turned on or turned off. Latest 3.X firware: Not sure. Would have expected it would be on sunsolve... The DST patches typically have very few pre-requisites and can *usually* be added in isolation, however, it's simple enough (and wise) to grab the patch and check it's deps. Not much help, I know, but I stand by what I opened with. Touching these things when you are not very familiar with them is a minefield. What will you do if the FW update kills some functionality? Do you have a backout? What if the Solaris patches kill the box etc. What if it corrupts the LDAP database? I know I'm being cautious here, but if you don't have answers in your mind as to how you would deal with this stuff, then beware. :) (Yes yes, to the others on the list, I know. Amusing coming from me that you should be careful, know what you are doing and have a backout plan... :) Cheers! Nathan.
