Also, SuSE has the ability to restore GRUB with a pretty simple UI. The procedure is kind of obscure - you need to use the install disk to boot your SuSE partition, then use the "control panel" (YaST) to reinstall the bootloader (it does LILO too).
But, I agree, reinstalling your whole OS is a bit excessive.
