I think it is a little presumptuous of Sharif Ali to appoint himself
and his friends the Stakeholders. Seems to me that when folks who
had spent some 15 years drafting, researching, and presenting the
SHCG Historical District Designation theses same people who had
canvassed the neighborhood, supported the designation with a house
by house historical significance survey, and narrative by educated
specialists about the significance of the designation were shot down
by AK and gang. For really no logical reason they gave bizarre
explanation involving being "authentic stakeholders" or apartment-
lords not wanting people to step on their toes to preventing them
from remuddling historic structures. How do you get to be a
stakeholder? in the West Philadelphia Street Car Suburb Historic
district. Is this a new term for your Sharif Al and all? Heaven
forbid UCD propose a plan to keep up the neighborhood!!
this touches on something I've been thinking about, in
relation to the discussions here about community
organizations and individuals, about volunteering and
working together, how we get things done, the concept of
'we', etc.
the other day al posted something about individual
responsibilities vs group participation. the idea that one
need not join a group in order to be considered an equal
urban dweller.
yes, I think this is where people get confused about 'who is
a stakeholder' and 'who is not a stakeholder.' some think
that stakeholders are those who have affiliated themselves
with some identifiable group; others think that stakeholders
are the unaffiliated ones these groups represent or serve.
so it gets confusing.
here's the deal: we're all stakeholders.
and we're all free to volunteer and join whatever community
group we'd like (or not), to accomplish whatever we want (or
not). we just have to remember that, volunteerism, like
religion, isn't a pre-requisite for being a citizen
(neighbor), nor does it entitle anyone with greater or
lesser rights as a citizen (neighbor). and all this is true
even when the volunteerism is institutionalized (ucd); state
religions cannot compete with citizens' rights in a secular
democracy.
