Or maybe it is firmware related? My display arrived this week so maybe
it has a newer firmware version? 
Switching on and off the backlight is done by using
/sys/class/backlight/rpi_backlight/bl_power. A value of 0 turns it of
while a value of 1 turns it on.    
By the way, I'm also using a PI2 with piCorePlayer 2.01.
