The best way to find out what works is to visit Apple's web site. They do maintain a pretty good listing of what hardware works with X.
I found that out the hard way while looking for a PC-Cardbus to Firewire adapter for a G3 laptop. Lots of cards out there - only two actually listed as compatible on Apple's list.
