How closely is any OS X install tied to the hardware?

My dilemma is this: I have OSX running on my upgraded 7600 on an ATA
disk. I just got a Beige G3, that will be upgraded to a G4/450.

Doesanyone know what will happen is I just plop the drive into the
newmachine? Does the OSX install leave out stuff or is it like the old
'universal install' a system that'll run on any Macintosh?

(I suppose I can just try it and see...though I'm mainly concered about
trying to get my new system working reliably after the transfer, with
all my files and preferences and such intact.)

Failing this, is there a way of just moving a user from one system to
another?
