I was about to post asking for something like this for CUPS when you posted that link.
So I followed everything in the tutorial but it doesn't work. My printer is a Deskwriter 540 (Mac vers. of Deskjet 540C) linked via a direct serial connection to the printer port. I am running 10.3.2 and have installed GIMP-Print 4.2.6 and the Panther version of this guy's Serial Enabler. I set up the printer as per the instructions but it doesn't work. The progress in CUPS gets to 16% then stops, AFAIK it's been sat there all night and nothing has come out of the printer yet.
