I tried them and got my problematic HP LaserJet 4M+ to work somewhat, but not perfectly.
I later bought an HP parallel-to-USB cable off eBay for $5 shipped. If you have a parallel port, the HP cable #C4033 - 60003 seems to adapt any printer with a parallel port directly to USB without needing any extra drivers in OS X.
