I know it's been going a while, but I'll reiterate my success with HP 4ML.
This is an AppleTalk Printer, it is connected to my old 9600 via AppleTalk, the 9600 is connected to my 10/100 switch via ethernet and I use Laserwriter bridge to allow my G5 to see/print to it.
I works flawlessly. 9600 is running OS9.1 and G5 running Panther.
Total cost $0 as it's a download from Apple FTP archives
Well it turns out that Matt Broughton (who runs the page linked earlier in this thread) has found that there is no way on god's earth that HP Deskwriter printers (presumably earlier models) will work on the internal serial in OS X. He an I are equally baffled as to why. I suspect the hardware is just too old on the printer side, or they use some odd handshaking method not covered in CUPS.
My latest stunt is to stuff a Mac LC under the printer running the above mentioned Appletalk Bridge (i have it on nearly all my non-OSX Macs as a means of emergency link for machines with no ethernet to connect to the LAN - and it works too, albeit slowly!) and a very very small booting copy of System 7.1 with the Open Transport TCP/IP and AppleShare guts from Mac OS 8.1. Possibly a slight overkill as the printer really uses AppleTalk, not TCP/IP. Haven't set it up yet - will let everyone know how it goes!
