I later bought an HP parallel-to-USB cable off eBay for $5 shipped. If you have a parallel port, the HP cable #C4033 - 60003 seems to adapt any printer with a parallel port directly to USB without needing any extra drivers in OS X.

That wouldn't help RE: the Deskwriter as it's serial only (not it is NOT a Deskjet - they either had both or just parallel). However I have a HP Laserjet 6L atop my 9600 that is currently plugged into my PC via parallel and shared via SMB sharing. It works but it means i have to switch my PC on to print anything to it. A USB->Parallel adapter might be an idea to link it into my 9600 server.
