Also, if I do that, and that takes up the place of my super fast CD Re-Writer (52X 32X 52X), could I still keep that writer in the sysem but house it outside the box. I know that might look messy but if I don't care about that, and I have an available place on the motherboard to connect the ribbon caple and power it, it should work right? Might that also help to alleviate heat issues? And by the way, has anyone ever tried powering internal devices externally through some adapter so that the computer does not "run out juice"?

my beige g3 desktop has 5 internal hard drives. I pulled the cd drive and the floppy drive to replace them with hard drives, did this with os9 and thaught I dont need a cd drive as I had a 2nd os9 on another hard drive.

later I put (for os-x installation) the ide cd drive in a spare scsi enclosure with built in supply, attached a 50cm ide cable to the 2nd ide port, did some light modification of the mac case to get the cable out at the backside and removed the scsi sockets from the scsi case to get the ide cable in the box

just ensure that the (no more) scsi case is powered on and off same time than the mac. (my box is a server running 24/7 so I dont really care about this)

So I have one ide port external, the power for the cd drive comes from the scsi enclosure - and it looks not totally bad...
