The difference between OS 9 and OS X is bigger than the difference between
MS-DOS and its contemporary Mac OS. It's like going from a motorcycle with
a sidecar and panniers held on with duct tape to a family sedan. It's like
going from renting an apartment to owning a house, from a small town to a
big city, from school to a career.

The higher quality graphics subsystem means you need a better video card and
a lot more memory to get comparable performance, but at the same time you
quit having to wait for programs to load, open files, open windows, repaint
and refresh windows, perform calculations, save files. Instead of having
one program that's *really* running that locks up the GUI when it's too
busy to bother with its background peers, everything is really running at
once, and it just works.

I started with a 604e/180 with 96M and OS X 10.1, and it was slow as hell
to set up and manage windows, those huge bitmaps meant it was swapping all
the time and rendering a PDF-quality window was slow, but response time
to actions that weren't limited by memory or the CPU... dragging and moving
windows, navigating menus once rendered... was better than on OS 9 on the
same box.

With enough memory and an OpenGL-capable video card, it's fine.

You really really want to max out your RAM, you'll want at least 4G of disk
dedicated to doing system stuff, and if you don't already have at least a
Rage 128 you'll want to get one.
