Ironically, it now takes longer to boot up: with G3 300: 2:02, with G4 1Ghz: 2:36. The screen stays black and displays no verbose text for a whole 1.5 minutes whereas before, it began this display within 15 seconds of turning on the computer. Will be submitting a report to xlr8yourmac.com's database, but I wanted to be sure I've got this thing running as well as it's going to run. Would just like to confirm it.
If you have more RAM in the Mac, the startup will take longer due to RAM checking before bootup. Also, the L3 cache speeds up everything including startup. Enable the L3 cache and see if you get a speedup.
Under OS 9 you could disable RAM checking on startup by holding option key down before selecting memory control panel and another option would show. Is there something similar for X. Only if people feel there is an issue with waiting a few extra seconds for bootup
