I'm using an 8500, 450MHz Sonnet G4, SCSI disks, and both an
Audiophile 2496 card and a Griffin iMic. Software is DP4, Peak 4 DV,
Metro SE 6.1, etc. I got a combined Firewire/USB2 card but had some
problems with the USB2 part, and went back to a USB1.1 card with a
Griffin "Audio Hub".
Analog audio-in seems a bit susceptible to clicks, probably from
disk seeks. The iMic and the 2496 seem indistinguishable in quality
at 44.1KHz. The iMic may be slightly more click-resistant, probably
because its A/D conversion is outboard. Maybe getting an ATA card for
disks or using Firewire drive would eliminate the problem, but I
haven't tried that yet, mostly because I need an additional ethernet
port, and thus (with the USB card and the Audiophile) all three PCI
slots are filled!

Built-in microphone port and audio-out work fine in OS 10.2.8, though
not the 8500's "planb" RCA-connected video/audio (which isn't as good
anyways). I'm using the Sonnet software rather than XPostFacto right
now.

Despite the fact that this stuff is cheap and mostly works, I'd really
recommend getting at least a G4 box with a faster bus for audio...a
"quicksilver" or later. Used prices have come down a lot. You can
easily end up spending less than you would upgrading the old box, and
you'll get DVD support, built-in Firewire, larger memory capacity, and
so on. --Lee
