thanks to prior post:
yes Protools Free is the cheapest way... use os 9 and you can use built in audio jacks for straight audio work...
also get a relatively cheap midi interface (i have a Midiman Macman) now midiman is called M-audio for around $25. hook into yr serial port and you can at least start doing midi work with an external synth.
as stated before others will have better recommendation on midi specific programs or using virtual instruments. ??Garageband?
and if you are going to burn to disc, then youll need a cd writer and toast.
Garage band is really really taxing on systems. My G5 1.8 obviously runs it well, but you can still see CPU usage spiking, and lots of disk activity.
I installed it on my Dads B&W G3 450 and it will do somethings but not add new instruments to a track live - you need to add them then play track - not much good if you are trying different things. Now bear in mind this is installed on OEM HD on internal ATA 33 bus, I am yet to move his OSX to a 7200 rpm drive hanging off ATA100 bus, where I suspect it might be OK. I suspect a G4 processor would also help significantly as well.
A little off topic but still relevant, I just replaced my DVR 106 in G5 with DVR 107 drive and installed old drive into B&W - iDVD dosen't run under that config - again I suspect is the G4 that's required to work. Toast recognizes DVD burner fine and functions correctly with it, Apple system profiler reports it correctly too.
